Church Apologizes for AIDS Stigma

Simon Robinson, TIME's bureau chief in Johannesburg, has drawn my attention to this article from the BBC about the recent decision of the Anglican Church in Kenya to apologize for its past practice of shunning people with AIDS as sinners.

Simon writes: "This is a significant shift, not just in Kenya, but also in the region. Though
some churches have led the fight against AIDS in Africa (notably some Christian congregations in Uganda and Muslim leaders in Senegal) and while some brave religious leaders (Bishop Kevin Dowling in South Africa) have spoken out against official Church dogma, on the whole churches have been slow to join the fight against AIDS and often actively worked against civil society efforts to reduce
stigma and prejudice."
